Unsure which trek is right for you?

It is as important to us as it is to you that you choose the right trek to match your requirements with your level of trekking experience. Destinations

We trek in a wide variety of environments – our destinations range from the Himalaya to the Sahara desert. Click on the our home page or the destinations tab above to see our range of destinations.

Itineraries

We have detailed itineraries for all our treks, which include a route description and details of what the trip price includes and excludes. Please ensure you have seen the itinerary for your trip prior to booking. Itineraries can be found by clicking on the link on each trek page. Alternatively we can email or post them to you.

Dates and bespoke dates

We schedule our treks to run at the optimum time of year, which we define as the best time of year for the weather, but for certain treks, we try to avoid the times when the trail is at its busiest. To view our dates click here.
If the dates we have indicated are not suitable for you, please contact us and we quote you for a bespoke trek. In some circumstances, this may well be at the same price as the one shown on our main price list.

Prices

A complete breakdown of what the price includes is on the detailed itinerary which is available for each trek. All our prices are land-only, though we can arrange flights for you if you wish us to do so for the long-haul destinations. Our prices assume a minimum number of participants on the trek. If that minimum number of trekkers is not realised we will offer you the choice of changing your trek, to pay a supplement to enable the trek to happen, or, of course, a refund of your deposit. What is land-only?

As flight prices now vary so widely, the prices of all our trips are shown on a “land-only” basis. This means a fairer price for all our clients – if you book early you get the widest choice of flights, usually at the cheapest fares. Those who book late may well find flights are more expensive with less choice of timings or routings.
We can book flights for you – indeed, most people ask us to book flights for them for long-haul destinations, as they then benefit from ATOL protection. If you prefer to book your own flights you are welcome to do so as soon as we advise you that your trip is guaranteed to depart.

Trek grading

Our treks vary to suit many different levels of experience and ability – from those who haven’t trekked before to the trekking connoisseur. Our trek grading and trek summary web pages should help you in choose the trek that is best for you. If you are not sure, please contact us for advice

Accommodation

Some treks are hotel-based, others use local mountain accommodation and others involve camping (tents provided). Details of the accommodation used can be found in the detailed itinerary for each individual trek.

Flights for individuals

If you wish us to secure international flights for you we will quote you for a flight. We require you to pay us in full for your flight at the time that we reserve it for you. You will benefit from ATOL protection if you indicate on your booking form that you wish us to book flights for you.

If you choose to book your own flights it is essential that before doing so, you contact the trekMountains office to ensure that your trip is guaranteed to run. Please note that if you source your own flights, you will not benefit from ATOL protection.

Flights for groups

If you are booking in a group of 10 or more travelling together, we can usually arrange a group flight. In this case, we require a flight deposit at the time of arranging the flights and the flight balance is due with the trek balance. You will benefit from ATOL protection if you indicate on your booking form that you wish us to book flights for you.

What is ATOL protection?

ATOL is a protection scheme for flights and air holidays, managed by the Civil Aviation Authority. Most firms who sell air travel in the UK are required by law to hold a licence called an Air Travel Organiser’s Licence (ATOL). If you’ve booked and contracted with a licensed tour operator for a complete air holiday package or just a flight, ATOL protects you from losing money or being stranded abroad if the tour operator goes out of business. If a licensed firm goes out of business, the CAA can give refunds to people who can’t travel and arrange for people abroad to fly home.
But be aware, not all air travel arrangements are ATOL protected. If you build a holiday buying flights and accommodation from different suppliers (a DIY holiday), you may not be protected if things go wrong.

Extension options

Extensions are available for most of our trips. To avoid disappointment or further expenses it is always best to discuss your extension requirements with us prior to arranging any flights. Please indicate on the booking form if you are considering an extension.

Travelling solo

If you are travelling alone we will allocate rooms and tents on a shared basis with someone of the same gender. If you would prefer to pay for a single room or a single tent, please indicate this on the booking form (subject to availability – not always possible on some treks).

Payment schedule

1. To secure a booking a £300 deposit must accompany a signed booking form. We accept payments by cheque (to trekMountains) or by bank transfer (account details are on the booking form).

2. Flights sourced by us require payment in full at the time we secure the flights for you (see International Flights section). This will happen as soon as your chosen trip has sufficient participants to guarantee the departure.

3. The trek balance is due 8 weeks prior to departure. We ask you to make a note of the balance due date that is on your invoice, as, to keep costs to a minimum, reminder invoices are not sent out.

Last minute bookings

Any bookings made less than 8 weeks prior to departure require full payment with the booking form.

On receipt of your booking

We will send you a confirmation letter and an invoice which will outline your payment schedule.

We will also send you a country-specific document called “Preparing for your trek”, which will tell you in detail the things you need to do prior to your trek. It also includes the essential information, including visa advice, monetary matters, equipment lists, medical and insurance forms etc.

If you book flights with us, we will also send you your ATOL Certificate once we have received payment for the flights.

Insurance

We strongly advise all clients to ensure that they have adequate insurance cover as soon as they have made a booking with us – see Preparing for your Trek for detailed insurance requirements.

Passports

Most countries require you to have at least 6 months validity on your passport when you enter the country. Please check now to see if you need to renew your passport prior to travel.

Visas

Some of our trips require visas, and it is your responsibility to get these, except for Bhutan which we will obtain for you. Please refer to Preparing for your trek for details.
